Thailand is fully entering an aging society, and “osteoporosis” is one of the most common health problems in this demographic. Understanding and preparing to deal with this disease today is crucial for a good quality of life in the future.
What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a condition where bone mass decreases, causing the internal bone structure to become thinner and more porous. This leads to bones lacking strength, becoming brittle, and prone to fractures, even from minor impacts, especially in the hips, spine, and wrists.
This disease is more common in women, particularly during menopause, as declining estrogen levels affect bone breakdown and formation.
How to Care for and Prevent Osteoporosis
Preventing and managing osteoporosis can be done in several ways:
- Consume foods rich in Vitamin D and Calcium:
- Calcium: The primary component of bones. Adequate calcium intake helps strengthen and repair bones.
- Vitamin D: Plays a crucial role in helping the body efficiently absorb calcium from food.
- Avoid heavy lifting and climbing to high places: For individuals with osteoporosis, heavy lifting places significant stress on the bones, potentially leading to easy fractures. Similarly, climbing to high places increases the risk of falls, which can be extremely dangerous.
- Exercise appropriately and regularly: Low-impact, weight-bearing exercises and exercises that improve balance and muscle strength, such as Tai Chi, yoga, or brisk walking, help increase bone density and strengthen muscles around the joints, reducing the risk of falls.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking: These behaviors directly reduce the body’s efficiency in absorbing calcium and negatively impact bone density, leading to faster bone degeneration.
Preparing ourselves by adjusting lifestyle habits and adopting proper health care will help us cope with and prevent osteoporosis. This will ensure you have strong bones and can live independently, without relying on wheelchairs or walking aids in the future.
